Camden
is the oldest inland city in the state of South Carolina. As of 2009, the estimated population was 7,103. Camden is rich in historical architecture, and offers tours of its' more than 40 homes built prior to the American Civil War. In addition, carriage rides are available of the historic downtown area. Camden was also the site of one of the greatest defeats for the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. A two-mile trail marks the spot, with signs along the way describing the action. Camden Revolutionary War Park is a 98-acre outdoor museum complex. It contains several restored homes of the period, reconstructions of military forts and a mansion that was used as British headquarters during the war. Other attractions in town include the Quaker Cemetery, which is over 250 years old, and the Camden Archives Museum. In the 20th century, Camden became well-known for its' equestrian activities. It's home to third oldest active polo field in the United States. According to Kershaw County's web site, "That interest in equine activities has continued and today the horse industry is a major part of the county economy. For that reason, the county is known as the 'Steeplechase Capital of the World'." For outdoor fun, Camden offers Goodale State Park, which is most well-known for its' canoeing and kayaking. A three-mile paddling trail winds through cypress trees for a scenic, relaxing ride. Shoreline fishing and picnicking is also available at the state park.

Inland South Carolina ,in the central region, has a climate that is humid and subtropical. This means long, hot and humid summers and short, mild winters. The climate is influenced by the combination of the state's relatively low latitude and low elevation, and proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. Inland South Carolina generally experiences brief cold spells in the winter, with snow usually only occurring in the mountains and Upper Piedmont area. On average, the state receives 49 inches of precipitation per year, most in the form of rain. March is the wettest month inland. The state is prone to tropical storms and hurricanes from June through November, but areas along the coastline are most vulnerable to this type of storm. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer.
