Lake-Murray
lies in the heart of South Carolina just a short drive from downtown Columbia. Constructed between 1927 and 1930 by the South Carolina Electric & Gas Company, the Saluda Dam formed the 50,000-acre lake which provides electricity for South Carolina's entire Midlands region. When the dam was built, Lake Murray was the largest power reservoir and Saluda Dam was the largest earthen dam in the world. The lake covers 78 square miles and has 649 miles of shoreline, is 41 miles long and 14 miles wide, at its' widest point. The dam is 208 feet high and a mile and a half across, with Highway 6 running along the top of it, giving panoramic views of the lake on one side and the SCE&G power plant below. Several communities are situated around the lake, including Lexington, Ballentine, Chapin and Prosperity. Today, Lake Murray is a popular recreational lake and offers boating, sailing, fishing, canoeing, water skiing and jet skiing, swimming and camping. Lunch Island, situated in the middle of Lake Murray is North Americas first officially designated Purple Martin sanctuary. On summer evenings, boats gather at dusk to witness thousands of Purple Martins coming to the island to roost. Nearby Columbia offers attractions such as the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden, Columbia Museum of Art, EdVenture Children's Museum, and the South Carolina State House Museum.

The central inland region of South Carolina has a humid, subtropical climate with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. The climate is influenced by the state's relatively low latitude and low elevation, and proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. Inland South Carolina generally experiences brief cold spells in the winter, with snow usually only occurring in the mountains and Upper Piedmont area. On average, the state receives 49 inches of precipitation per year, most in the form of rain. The state is prone to tropical storms and hurricanes from June through November, but areas along the coastline are most vulnerable to this type of storm. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer.
