Wateree-Lake is located in the Northern Midlands/Lower Piedmont region and is one of South Carolina's premier fishing and boating lakes. The Lake Wateree dam was built in 1919, making it one of the oldest in the state. It is just off U.S. Highway 21 near Interstate 77 and is an easy drive from the city of Columbia and the Camden and the Rock Hill areas. The Lake Wateree State Recreation Area is situated on the lake's Desporte Island and offers camping, picnic tables, a playground and a mile-long hiking trail through tranquil woods. The lake is 21 miles long and 13,700 acres. It is filled with a large population of striped bass, crappie, bream, largemouth bass and catfish. A tackle shop/park store with refueling dock and public boat ramp is located inside the park. To reach Lake Wateree from I-77, take Exit 41 and follow secondary 41 north to the stop sign at Highway 21. Turn left and go approximately two to three miles to the first paved road on the right. Turn right onto Road 101 (River Road.) The park is 5.5 miles on the left. Park hours are Monday through Sunday, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with extended hours to 10:00 p.m. during Daylight Savings Time. There is a small admission fee to the park.

Wateree Lake Weather & Climate

Inland South Carolina ,in the central region, has a climate that is humid and subtropical. This means long, hot and humid summers and short, mild winters. The climate is influenced by the combination of the state's relatively low latitude and low elevation, and proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. Inland South Carolina generally experiences brief cold spells in the winter, with snow usually only occurring in the mountains and Upper Piedmont area. On average, the state receives 49 inches of precipitation per year, most in the form of rain. March is the wettest month inland. The state is prone to tropical storms and hurricanes from June through November, but areas along the coastline are most vulnerable to this type of storm. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer.
