Harbor-Island
is a private 1,400-acre barrier island located near the city of Beaufort off the South Carolina seacoast. This beautiful island has three miles of unspoiled, sandy beach, picturesque sand dunes covered in sea oats and beach grasses and natural salt marshes. A quiet, gated community is also part of Harbor Island. You won't find traffic or a lot of noise on this island - just the sound of the waves and sea birds. Even in the height of the season, it's never crowded. It's a great place for birding and wildlife viewing where you can observe sea turtles, gulls, herons, pelicans, porpoise - Harbor Island is home to the 350,000-acre ACE Basin National Estuarine Research. You can enjoy swimming, sunning, beachcombing, shrimping, crabbing, surf fishing, or charter boat fishing. There are also four public golf courses and many fine restaurants located near Harbor Island. The historic city of Beaufort is just minutes away with its' old plantations, National Historic Landmark District, antique shops, art galleries and boutiques. Charleston and Savannah, Georgia make great day trips (Charleston is about one hour and 45 minutes and Savannah is an hour and 15 minutes.) Southeast South Carolina, along the coast , has a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Winters are short and very mild, with less than an inch of measurable snowfall per year. Occasional rain is likely in winter, with freezing rain a possibility, but more likely inland. Precipitation is abundant all year long, with thunderstorms in spring and summer. The South Carolina coast is prone to tropical cyclones and hurricanes, with the annual hurricane season running June through November. The most notable hurricane was Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Warning is generally given to residents prior to hurricanes, giving them plenty of time to prepare.
