Hunting-Island
is a four-mile long barrier island located near the historic city of Beaufort on the South Carolina coast. Once used as a hunting preserve for wealthy plantation owners, Hunting Island was renowned for its hunting parties that lasted for several days at a time. The island is now home to Hunting Island State Park, which is a 5,000-acre semi-tropical natural environment, which includes four miles of sandy beach, a maritime forest and saltwater marshland and extensive wildlife. Also on the island is the Hunting Island Lighthouse, built in 1875 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Guests can climb to the top of the lighthouse for a spectacular view of the coastline. Camping is available on Hunting Island, along with activities like fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing and birding and collecting seashells and sand dollars. Hunting Island is also a nesting ground for the Loggerhead Turtle. (Please note: it is very important not to disturb a nest should you find one.) The Hunting Island Marshwalk extends across the marsh to a small island that is a great spot for viewing wildlife and for crabbing. The war scenes from the Tom Hanks movie "Forrest Gump" were shot near this marshwalk. The park hours are Monday through Sunday 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with extended hours during Daylight Savings Time. To reach Hunting Island, take Highway 21 east towards Beaufort for about 42 miles. The highway ends at the state park.

Southeast South Carolina, along the coast , has a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Winters are short and very mild, with less than an inch of measurable snowfall per year. Occasional rain is likely in winter, with freezing rain a possibility, but more likely inland. Precipitation is abundant all year long, with thunderstorms in spring and summer. The South Carolina coast is prone to tropical cyclones and hurricanes, with the annual hurricane season running June through November. The most notable hurricane was Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Warning is generally given to residents prior to hurricanes, giving them plenty of time to prepare.
