Lake-Greenwood
is a lovely lake and state park located in South Carolina's western Piedmont Region. The 914-acre park covers five peninsulas and provides 212 miles of lakeshore for camping, boating, fishing and picnicking. Lots of hiking trails are also found in the park, along with a playground, public restrooms, picnic shelters, a store and boat ramp. Both primitive camping and campsites with facilities are available at Lake Greenwood. This state park was built in 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and still retains evidence of the CCC's craftsmanship in its' two picnic shelters, the retaining wall at the lake, the boathouse and a water fountain. Lake Greenwood State Park is also home to the South Carolina Half-Iron Man Competition each fall. The park's hours are Monday through Sunday 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with extended hours during Daylight Savings Time. The small town of Greenwood is located nearby and offers shopping, restaurants and other services in an appealing, small-town atmosphere. To reach the park from Greenwood, take Highway 72 for about six miles, turn right onto Highway 246 for approximately five miles and then turn left onto Highway 702. The park is located seven miles on the left.

Northwest South Carolina has a humid, subtropical climate. Areas further north in what is known as the "Upstate" area has less of the characteristics of a subtropical climate than places along the coastline. Even so, the winters are mild in northwest South Carolina and summers are warm and humid. Cyclones and thunderstorms are possible in the northern part of the state in summer and early autumn. Tornadoes are possible in the spring and again in November. Precipitation is abundant all year long, and snowfall averages six inches in the northwest. Freezing rain is more of a possibility in South Carolina than snow.
