Newberry
is located in the center of the state, west of the capital city of Columbia. Rolling hills, a mild climate, numerous recreational opportunities and a small-town atmosphere makes Newberry an appealing place to live or visit. There are many parks and golf courses located in the Newberry area, along with antique shops, art galleries, concerts, fine dining and shopping. One of the city's main attractions is the Newberry Opera House. Built in 1882, this historic structure features a French Gothic clock tower that dominates Newberry's skyline. In the early days, a variety of shows and plays, famed vocalists, magicians, novelty acts and boxing exhibitions appeared on the stage. In the early 1900s, silent movies were shown at the theater, and as movies began to replace live theater, the Opera House eventually was turned into a movie theater. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and after a complete renovation, today the Newberry Opera House once again is the site of operas, musicals, jazz concerts, vocal and other performances. Other attractions near the town of Newberry include beautiful Lake Murray, the Riverbanks Zoo, EdVenture Children's Museum and the Columbia Museum of Art.

The central inland region of South Carolina has a humid, subtropical climate with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. The climate is influenced by the state's relatively low latitude and low elevation, and proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. Inland South Carolina generally experiences brief cold spells in the winter, with snow usually only occurring in the mountains and Upper Piedmont area. On average, the state receives 49 inches of precipitation per year, most in the form of rain. The state is prone to tropical storms and hurricanes from June through November, but areas along the coastline are most vulnerable to this type of storm. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer.
