Wadmalaws-Island
is considered the most unspoiled of Charleston's Sea Islands. Bordered by the Bohicket River to the east and the North Edisto River to the west, Wadmalaw remains intensely rural, with farming supporting many of its residents, both past and present, and fishing, crabbing and shrimping also a primary means of earning a living for a many of Wadmalaw's residents. Along the island's southern tip lies Rockville, the charming picturesque hamlet that was featured in scenes from the movie, "Queen," by Alex Haley. There are no stores or restaurants outside of Rockville, and hundreds of acres of the island's woods and wetlands are protected from development. However, in recent years, beautiful upscale homes have been built along the waterfront. Each year, Wadmalaw hosts a Gullah festival including exhibits and demonstrations of traditional African-American arts and crafts like basket weaving. Another point of interest is the Charleston Tea Plantation, which is the only tea plantation in America where plants are descended from those that have been grown for more than 100 years in the Lowcountry. The plantation's unusual heritage began in 1799 when a French botanist brought the first tea plants to Charleston. Wadmalaw Island provides the ideal conditions for tea growing - hot humid summers and sandy soils for good drainage. The plantation produces American Classic Teas, the official Hospitality Beverage of South Carolina.

Mid-point, along the coastline of South Carolina, has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid and winters are mild. The area receives a significant amount of rainfall year-round. Summer is the wettest season with almost half the annual precipitation occurring during this time. Thunderstorms are possible in the spring and summer. Winters are short with occasional rain. Snow flurries are possible in the winter, but rare. Hurricanes are a major threat to this area during the summer and early fall. The most notable one in recent history was Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Plenty of warning is generally given to residents prior to hurricanes, giving them time to prepare.
