Folly-Beach
is a barrier island located just eight miles from historic Charleston. Nestled between the Folly River and the Atlantic Ocean, it is six and a half miles long and full of natural beauty and South Carolina charm. Folly Beach has a very interesting history that includes shipwrecks, the Civil War, bootlegging and hurricane survival. Today, it is considered one of the top spots for surfing on the East Coast and hosts a number of surfing contests each year, including the Wahine Contest in May. Fishing is another popular sport, especially from the Folly Beach Edwin S. Taylor Pier, or "Fishing Pier," which extends more than 1,045 feet into the Atlantic. The pier is also a very picturesque place to stroll, watch the birds or just enjoy the beautiful views. There are three county parks on the island and the Morris Island Lighthouse can be viewed from the one located on the eastern tip of Folly Beach. Swimming is allowed at all beaches on the island, with access to the beach at the end of every block. There is one wheelchair access ramp at 9th Street on West Ashley. Other activities available on Folly Beach include biking, kayaking, jet skiing, boating, parasailing, camping and picnicking. Accommodations on the island are varied, from quaint beach cottages to luxurious hotels and condominiums. Folly Beach also has great restaurants and local shops that offer everything from seashells and souvenirs to surfing gear.

Folly Beach Weather & Climate

Mid-point, along the coastline of South Carolina, has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid and winters are mild. The area receives a significant amount of rainfall year-round. Summer is the wettest season with almost half the annual precipitation occurring during this time. Thunderstorms are possible in the spring and summer. Winters are short with occasional rain. Snow flurries are possible in the winter, but rare. Hurricanes are a major threat to this area during the summer and early fall. The most notable one in recent history was Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Plenty of warning is generally given to residents prior to hurricanes, giving them time to prepare.
