Edisto-Island
is a sea island located south of the city of Charleston on Highway 174. The small town of Edisto Beach is located on the southern tip of the island. Edisto Island is very quiet with a low-key, relaxed atmosphere - truly a naturalist's dream. It originally belonged to the Edistow Indians and was purchased in 1674 by the Earl of Shaftsbury for some beads, cloth, hatchets and other goods. The cotton industry brought great prosperity to Edisto Island and many of the plantation owners built spectacular homes, many of which can be toured by visitors today. The drive from Charleston to Edisto Island is quite scenic and takes you through peaceful farmlands and moss-covered oak archways, past old-fashioned country churches and antebellum plantations. The McKinley Washington Jr. Bridge at the Intracoastal Waterway marks the gateway to Edisto Island. Besides the town, the island is home to the 1,255-acre Edisto Beach State Park, which includes a dense maritime forest and large salt marsh. The park offers day-use beach areas, camping, and a four-mile hiking trail that takes you through the maritime forest. An Interpretive Center with interactive displays is also inside the park. As you enter the town of Edisto Beach, the entrance to the State Park is on the left. Other attractions on Edisto Island include an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Tom Jackson, and the Edisto Island Serpentarium, the first true serpentarium in South Carolina where you can view displays of reptiles from the region, as well as from around the world.

Southeast South Carolina, along the coast , has a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Winters are short and very mild, with less than an inch of measurable snowfall per year. Occasional rain is likely in winter, with freezing rain a possibility, but more likely inland. Precipitation is abundant all year long, with thunderstorms in spring and summer. The South Carolina coast is prone to tropical cyclones and hurricanes, with the annual hurricane season running June through November. The most notable hurricane was Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Warning is generally given to residents prior to hurricanes, giving them plenty of time to prepare.
