Summerville
is a lovely, historic town located in southeastern South Carolina. Most of the town is situated within Dorchester County, with small portions also in Berkeley and Charleston Counties. As of the 2010 census, the population was 43,392. Summerville is home to Azalea Park, which is what gives the town its' nickname of "Flower Town in the Pines." The 12-acre Azalea Park was first created in the 1930s by a group of Summerville women. It contains two gazebos, a pond, ornamental bridges, an amphitheater, butterfly pond, a water garden and walking paths. The first weekend in April each year, the park is the setting for the Flowertown Festival. Consistently ranked one of the top 20 events in the Southeast United States, this three-day festival includes a juried art show, rides and entertainment, a Children's Jubilee, and lots of delicious food. Other special events in town include the July 4th Red, White and Blue, Scarecrows on the Square in October and Holly Days in December. Summerville is also well-known for its' historic buildings and homes, with over 700 listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town has beautiful gardens and antebellum plantations, as well as plenty of restaurants, bed and breakfasts, specialty shops and boutiques. For outdoor fun, the area offers hiking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and golf.

Mid-point, along the coastline of South Carolina, has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid and winters are mild. The area receives a significant amount of rainfall year-round. Summer is the wettest season with almost half the annual precipitation occurring during this time. Thunderstorms are possible in the spring and summer. Winters are short with occasional rain. Snow flurries are possible in the winter, but rare. Hurricanes are a major threat to this area during the summer and early fall. The most notable one in recent history was Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Plenty of warning is generally given to residents prior to hurricanes, giving them time to prepare.
