Charleston
is called "The Cradle of Southern History and Charm," and it is, indeed, a city rich in history and southern culture. Settled by the British in the year 1670, nearly four million people a year visit the city of Charleston. There is so much to see and do here - the quaint horse-drawn carriages, beautiful antebellum mansions, gorgeous architecture and gardens, outstanding cuisine and entertainment. One of the best ways to see the city is with a historic tour and many different kinds are offered - walking tours, carriage tours or water tours, and tours that focus on specific things, such as the civil war, old graveyards, plantations or the harbor. The Old City Market in Charleston houses the Daughters of the Confederacy Museum and behind the Market Hall are four open-air buildings that span from Meeting Street to East Bay Street, near the waterfront. The market is filled with vendors selling food, local artwork, books, baskets, clothing and souvenirs. North Charleston is considered the transportation and business center for the lower half of the state and is home to the city's 14,000-seat coliseum and a 2,250-seat Performing Arts Center. Other places to visit in Charleston include the South Carolina Aquarium, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, Historic Fort Sumter and Mt. Pleasant, and the Historic Village of Summerville, home to over 700 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. For outdoor recreation, visitors love Folly Beach, located just 15 miles south of Charleston. Travel and Leisure Magazine named Charleston "America's Sexiest City," and "America's Most Friendly City" in 2011. The city has also been named "the most polite and hospitable city in America" by Southern Living Magazine.

Mid-point, along the coastline of South Carolina, has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid and winters are mild. The area receives a significant amount of rainfall year-round. Summer is the wettest season with almost half the annual precipitation occurring during this time. Thunderstorms are possible in the spring and summer. Winters are short with occasional rain. Snow flurries are possible in the winter, but rare. Hurricanes are a major threat to this area during the summer and early fall. The most notable one in recent history was Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Plenty of warning is generally given to residents prior to hurricanes, giving them time to prepare.
