Sullivans-Island
is located in Charleston County and is a barrier island north of the Charleston Harbor. As of 2000, it had a population of 1,911 full or part time residents. This island has a long military history with exciting stories of protecting the harbor from invaders. Remnants of the military are abundant in privately held military housing; even former fortifications are now single family residences. There are many historic homes on the island and many things to see and do. Located just 100 yards away across Breach inlet is the Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island's sister island. Isle of Palms is considered "more of a resort island," while Sullivan's is called "more of a beach town." There is a lovely restaurant area on the island, public tennis courts and an old-fashioned playground complete with a picturesque gazebo. The island is the burial site of Seminole Indian Chief, Osceola and also includes Fort Moultrie, originally built during the Revolutionary War. Other historic sites on Sullivan's Island include a lighthouse and numerous shore batteries that provided defense until the end of World War II. This is also where Edgar Allen Poe wrote many of his poems and his well-known story, The Gold Bug, while stationed on the island. Sullivan's offers wide, beautiful sandy beaches, fishing, swimming, boating, sunning, hiking and other seaside amenities.

Mid-point, along the coastline of South Carolina, has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid and winters are mild. The area receives a significant amount of rainfall year-round. Summer is the wettest season with almost half the annual precipitation occurring during this time. Thunderstorms are possible in the spring and summer. Winters are short with occasional rain. Snow flurries are possible in the winter, but rare. Hurricanes are a major threat to this area during the summer and early fall. The most notable one in recent history was Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Plenty of warning is generally given to residents prior to hurricanes, giving them time to prepare.
